A taster - from the foreword, 'Closing the Arc'
Some journeys in photography are measured in miles and assignments, in shutter counts and hard drives. But the journeys that matter most are usually measured differently: in the changing relationship between the photographer and time. In the way impatience slowly gives way to attention. In the quiet realisation that what I am really chasing is not novelty, but the feeling of a photograph that holds.
More than five decades ago, I was standing on a towpath alongside the Grand Union Canal in Denham, Rolleiflex in hand, looking down at the Denham Deep Lock, waiting for it to fill to the right level for the shot. Simply standing still, watching and listening to the water flow. The image I made that day was probably quite unremarkable. What it taught me was not.
That camera did not merely record what I saw. It altered how I stood in front of the world. The square frame, the waist-level view, the deliberate rhythm of working: these were not limitations to overcome. They were conditions in which attention could settle. Through it, I learned something foundational - that an image is not taken so much as entered into.
The book continues from there - back through 35mm and DSLRs, and forward to the GFX.
Neither book is available to order yet. I'll add publication details here when they're ready.
